Comprehensive Ophthalmology & Optometry Exams
Calenda EyeCare provides comprehensive family exams for all patients. The exams check for more than just visual acuity. They also check things such as color blindness, how well your eyes work together, how the structure of your eyes look under a microscope, and more.
For patients with healthy vision, we recommend coming in for a yearly exam.
Cataracts are usually an age-related clouding of the eye’s natural lens. The clouded lens may cause symptoms such as hazy or blurred vision, halos or rings of light and glare in bright sunlight.
With mild cataracts, a change of glasses or contacts may be sufficient to improve your vision. In cases where the cataract affects your ability to do things you need or want to do, cataract surgery is the only treatment available.
We employ modern micro surgically techniques to remove the cataract and inster a tiny lens implant to restore your best possible vision. This outpatient procedure allows you to go home just hours after surgery, providing a rapid recovery and a resumption of you normal activities within days.
In some cases, diabetes can have a significant impact on the health of the eye, While proper control of your blood sugar can help reduce the complications associated with diabetes, it is vitally important that you see an ophthalmologist on a regular basis. We want to ensure your good eye health and minimize any possible loss of vision.
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a medical condition which usually affects older adults and results in a loss of vision in the center of the visual field (the macula) because of damage to the retina. It occurs in "dry" and "wet" forms. It is a major cause of blindness and visual impairment in older adults (>50 years). Macular degeneration can make it difficult or impossible to read or recognize faces, although enough peripheral vision remains to allow other activities of daily life. (Source: Wikipedia)
Lasers have revolutionized ophthalmic surgery. Procedures that once required hours in surgery and a prolonged hospital stay can now be done in our office. We use lasers most frequently to treat glaucoma, diabetic complications of the eye and post cataract membranes.
Glaucoma is an eye disease usually associated with pressure inside the eye that is too high and causes damage to the optic nerve. If untreated, it can cause permanent vision loss. Because it is usually painless, glaucoma is often called “the sneak thief of sight.”
To detect glaucoma, you need to have your eye pressures checked and have periodic specialized tests to detect early vision loss. If glaucoma is detected, it can usually be controlled with eye drops. Occasionally, laser treatment or surgery may be required.
As an adult, you should have regular exams that include a comprehensive evaluation for glaucoma.
